Obsidian is a note-taking and knowledge management application for writing and organizing ideas privately. It is built for people who want a personal thinking space, from journaling and note-taking to building a larger knowledge base or managing projects, and its notes stay in plain Markdown files that a person keeps on their own device rather than on a remote server.
Notes can be linked to one another and viewed as an interactive graph that shows how ideas connect, tagged for organization, and laid out on an infinite canvas for brainstorming or diagramming. Because files are stored locally in an open, plain-text format, they remain readable and portable outside the application itself, and the software can be extended with thousands of community plugins and themes. Optional sync keeps notes updated across devices with end-to-end encryption and version history, and notes can also be published as a public wiki or knowledge base.
The core application is free to use without limits. Obsidian Sync and Obsidian Publish are paid add-ons for cross-device syncing and publishing, and Enterprise plans are available for organizations.
