n8n is a workflow automation platform that lets technical teams build and run AI agents and automate business processes using visual workflows, written code, or both together. It is aimed at developers and at IT, security and operations teams that want automation they can fully inspect and control rather than a closed system.
People build workflows by connecting prebuilt nodes on a canvas or by writing JavaScript or Python for more complex logic, and every step, prompt and response in an AI workflow stays inspectable, with human-in-the-loop checks and guardrails available along the way. Workflows can run on a user's own infrastructure, including Docker setups or air-gapped environments, or on n8n's managed cloud, and individual steps can be rerun or replayed with the same data for debugging.
n8n's source code is publicly available under a fair-code license, and the platform offers a free tier for getting started alongside paid tiered plans and a custom Enterprise option with single sign-on, SAML, LDAP and audit logs.
