Perplexity is an AI answer engine that responds to questions with a written answer and cited sources rather than a plain list of links. It is built for people doing research, fact-checking or quick lookups who want an answer alongside the pages it came from, instead of a results page to sift through by hand.
A person types a question into Perplexity's search bar, and the assistant searches the web in real time before returning a written answer with inline citations linking back to the original pages. A Pro Search mode adds access to additional underlying AI models and removes the daily cap on more advanced searches, and a separate Deep Research option runs longer, multi-step investigations for more complex topics.
Perplexity offers a free plan with unlimited basic search and a limited number of Pro searches per day. Paid Pro and Max subscriptions remove that daily cap and add access to more models, image generation and further research tools, and a separate Enterprise plan is billed per user for organizations; a discounted plan is also available for verified students.
